- 1865 Pattern Nickel Three-Cent Piece. Judd-414, Pollock-485. Rarity-7+. Oroide. Plain Edge. Proof-64 (PCGS). CAC. Regular die trials striking of the 1865 nickel three-cent piece.
Bright and reflective with considerable mint flash although the surfaces have a dusting of light carbon common to this period. Boldly clashed dies as well, with multiple impressions of Liberty's face present in the reverse fields, with light cracks there as well from die strain. Struck in oroide, which is a blend of 19 parts copper to one part aluminum, which gives a somewhat golden appearance to the copper blend. During this era the alloy was properly used in various other products such as watch cases and pens.
There are between four and six known, this is one of just three seen by PCGS and right in the middle of those graded by that service as PR-63, 64 and 65.
