- THE SOMMELIER COLLECTION This is an incredibly high end XF Sheldon-8. We may be somewhat jaded, handling Mint State examples over the years, but when a "perfect" collector grade Wreath cent crosses our desks, we remember how truly special these early coppers are, and how rare they are when they are nice. This one is better than "nice." Generally smooth surfaces show some natural planchet flaws on the obverse. These flaws came when the planchet stock was rolled out, and impurities in the metal led to the creation of some minor fissures. These generally blend into the smoothness of the surrounding areas. The medium, milk chocolate brown patina of the surfaces is a delight-- there are no signs of corrosion, verdirgris, or discoloration anywhere, which commonly plagues these early large cents. The planchet was well centered on the dies in the press, and the strike was bold, with crisp definition on both sides. The eye appeal is exceptional in every way. Any 1790s-dated coin is a direct tangible link to our country's founders. When these early large cents were struck, our country was in the midst of the second term of George Washington's presidency, and the economy was so fledgling that the mint officials had not been able to secure the funds to pay the security bonds that were required by the Coinage Act of 1792 in order to strike silver or gold coins. When we look back over the two and a quarter centuries since, this is a tangible link to a time when the United States was not the economic powerhouse it is now. PCGS 35, NGC 10, CAC 9. The current Collectors Universe value is $19,750 and the CAC CPG value is $21,600. There is a wide range of APRs, which vary with each coin's individual quality in the grade. We think this really eye appealing coin is worthy of a very strong bid and placement in a fantastic collection. Cert. Number 29345551 PCGS # 1347.00
