- 1857 Liberty Head Eagle. AU-55 (NGC). Sharply to fully struck over most design elements, this endearing piece also sports vivid patina in a blend of warm honey-orange color in areas. Ten-dollar gold eagle production at the Philadelphia Mint dipped to 16,606 circulation strikes in 1857, the lowest total from this facility recorded since 1844. This issue has a higher rate of survival than many Liberty Head eagles from the 1840s, however, and the persistent collector should be able to ferret out a suitable VF or EF.
