- 1885 Pattern Quarter Eagle. Judd-1752, Pollock-1965. Rarity-8. Aluminum. Reeded Edge. Proof-65 Cameo (PCGS). The obverse and reverse are the regular dies used to coin this denomination, but the planchet is aluminum. Handsome light aluminum-gray throughout, with strong contrast between the reflective fields and frosted devices. There is a pale golden patina on both sides likely from long storage in an envelope. It is curious to note die rust on the obverse, seen in the form of raised lumps both in the field before Liberty's neck as well as one her neck, another small patch of rust resides above star ten. This is more noteworthy as the other J-1752 aluminium quarter eagle does not show this feature-implying these have been struck at different times. Strange indeed. Only two examples are recorded between both PCGS and NGC, the other one is PCGS PR-65 but without the Cameo designation. One was in the Palace Collection of King Farouk, and the pedigree chain should be able to be assembled with some effort given the limited number available of this rare aluminum issue.
