- This is a beautiful example of this important World War II die variety. Bold, satiny, mint brilliance gleams on the glittering silver surfaces. The surfaces are generally smooth, free of all but the most insignificant traces of contact that you need a strong glass to observe. The devices are fully formed, crisply struck, and the overdate feature is bold, visible to the naked eye. The Denver mint 42/1 is scarcer overall than its Philadelphia counterpart, and the under digit is not as bold as either. That is likely the reason why the Philadelphia mint overdate was discovered in 1943, while the 42/1-D was not discovered until the early 1960s! This is why most survivors are known in circulated grades. There are a small number of Mint State coins that are close to, or of GEM quality, but these are few and far between. This is a great example of this date. PCGS 18, NGC 9, CAC 11. The last one to sell in auction was the Hallett Collection coin which realized $28,200 in our September 2018 Regency Auction. Prior to that, another sold for $28,200 in the 2017 ANA auction. The current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $31,500. Rare finer, this is a great coin bound for a high ranking set of Mercury dimes. Good luck! Cert. Number 25659650 PCGS # 5041.00
