- THE GEORGE SCHWENK COLLECTION What a marvelous way to start off the Schwenk Collection! The 1916 Standing Liberty quarter is a classic 20th century KEY date rarity, especially in GEM grade as offered here. Hermon MacNeil's glorious design was adopted late in 1916 and only 52,000 were struck in December that year. The first year of issue is always a popular date and add to that the low mintage and high rate of attrition, you have a classic combination for a KEY date. Luckily for collectors, a small number of examples were saved in high grade, though most show wear. This coin boasts a wonderfully glowing mint brilliance that radiates boldly on both sides. Mostly well struck, there is some weakness on the shield and Liberty's head, though they are not mushy or poorly defined either. A pleasing mix of iridescent pastel patina graces the surfaces, gently dusted on the GEM quality surfaces. While a strong glass reveals a tiny tick or two, there is nothing that is distracting to the eye appeal, which is outstanding! PCGS 29, NGC 25. The last example to sell in auction was back in November 2020, realizing $24,000. The current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $34,000. Fewer than 10 examples have graded finer in the non-FH designation. This is a great example to start off your set! Cert. Number 6695092 PCGS # 5704
