- 1804 Capped Bust Right Half Eagle. BD-7. Rarity-4. Normal (so-called Small) 8 Over Large 8. MS-63 (PCGS). CAC. A strikingly original coin with deep olive toning, nuances of pale blue near the date and soft orange gold in the reverse fields. Pleasing luster on both sides, but somewhat bolder in this regard on the reverse as usually seen. Struck on an adjusted planchet, with the telltale fine marks seen near the reverse rim from 3 o'clock to 6 o'clock, extending inward no further than through the eagle's tailfeathers and lower arrow shafts. The adjustment made the planchet a little uneven at this point resulting in slight shallowness to the reverse legends in this area, as well as on the L of LIBERTY which is directly opposite the eagle's tail. Nicely struck otherwise. Another interesting die in the early half eagle series, this obverse comes with a dramatic blundering of the date. The first three digits punched into the die were far too large, probably the punches used for eagles or silver dollars as the size and styling seems appropriate. The opinion has been presented that the first-punched numeral 1 is a blunt 1 without the upper serif, however, this example seems to clearly show the serif on the earlier digit at the top. The nature of the repunched 0 has also been disputed, but we agree with Harry Bass that there was in fact a larger 0 punched first and corrected to the normal digit. There is no question however regarding the 8, as both the first and second digits are boldly visible, ranking this among the few strongest such die engraving errors in the U.S. series. The die state of this example is just prior to the terminal one as described in Bass-Dannreuther, with the presence of all mentioned cracks but not quite the full development of the later ones. A most attractive Mint State example of this distinctive issue with just two examples graded finer by PCGS.

Numismatic Reflections by Q.
