- Among those tied for second highest graded at PCGS, there is just a single MS67+ graded finer for the date, and clearly this is a Condition Census example of the JR-9 variety, one of the more common marriages of the date. A deep, earth-tone palette of olive, tan, pewter, russet, and slate frame both obverse and reverse, accented by a thick, satiny frost belying the toning. GEM caliber surfaces are devoid of any notable marks or hairlines, even a powerful loupe fails to aid in the location of any post mint flaw of any kind. The striking definition is bold with generally crisp details on both sides. The eye appeal is quite nice. PCGS 6, NGC 3. Only a single MS66 has ever sold in auction, realizing $11,250 in a December 2020 internet only auction. The Pogue Collection had a Proof example of the "normal" date, and an MS66 example of the "Last 3 High" variety. The current Collectors Universe value is listed at $15,500 and as one of the absolute FINEST examples graded by PCGS of the date, regardless of variety, this is an exceptional piece to include in a set of Bust dimes or type coins. An opportunity like this may not appear again for some time. Good luck. PCGS # 38868.00
