- 1872 Indian Cent. FS-901. Shallow N. MS-64 RD (PCGS). OGH.
A key date issue among early bronze Indian cents, the 1872 is scarce in circulated grades and rare to very rare in Mint State. The coin we offer here is of further importance as an example of the Shallow N reverse hub variety, which is far rarer than the Bold N variety and becoming increasingly more difficult to locate. Bold reddish-golden luster remains on both sides, especially around the peripheries, with intermingled russet-brown patina on the obverse. The strike is uniformly bold. Of the 1872 Shallow N hub variety, Rick Snow (The Flying Eagle & Indian Cent Attribution Guide, 3rd Edition, Volume 1: 1856-1877, 2014) writes:
"The Shallow N design was abandoned for the Bold N design in 1870, but apparently a few extra dies with the Shallow N design were on hand until 1872. Four Shallow N reverse dies are known to have been used in 1872....Overall, the Shallow N is scarce. Presently, they show up with regularity, but as demand increases, they should be harder to locate."
This is an important chance for the specialist to acquire an example of this challenging hub variety.
