- 1786 Vermont Copper. RR-10, Bressett 8-G, W-2045. Rarity-4. Bust Left. Fine-12.
120.8 grains. Uniformly microporous deep golden-brown surfaces. Obverse rim tight to tops of VERMON, AUCT weak, natural rim flaw at V, scattered fissures, as struck, on the effigy's portrait and at ORI, no notable circulation marks present, reverse rim through bottoms of 17 and tight to the tops of INDE, natural rim flaw at 7 o'clock, another smaller rim flaw at 12 o'clock, tiny fissure on Liberty's face, no other marks of consequence visible. Typical overall appearance for Ryder-10 with the Carlotto book noting: "As with most of the Vermont 1785 and 1786 coinage, the planchet quality is poor. It is at its worst on the Bust Left coins. Metal for the Bust Lefts probably came from the melting of a previously made object. I use the word 'metal' because very few of these coins resemble pure copper." Carlotto's weight range runs from 92 to 125 grains for this variety, with the present coin about average in heft. To the uninitiated, the present coin will appear poor and uncollectable, but to a serious student of the Vermont copper series, the present coin will appear more choice than not for the variety.
