- 1662 Massachusetts Bay Colony Oak Tree Twopence. Noe-31, W-240. Rarity-4. Small 2. AU-58 (PCGS). 10.8 grains. One of the finest known examples of this scarce variety. Struck slightly off center toward 6 o'clock on the obverse, where the lower letters are off of the flan as commonly seen. The reverse is well centered and the date and denomination are both bold and clear. Deep lilac-gray toning uniformly covers both sides of this highly attractive specimen. Both the central and peripheral details are sharply impressed on these rather early Colonial coins, and considering their importance as the earliest silver coins struck in this yet to be formed country, are highly popular with collectors. There is an ancient strike through on the reverse which curls down from the upper rim through the second 6, and out to the right, from a thin thread like object which happened to be on the planchet at the moment it was struck. Important and hard to find in this high grade and with a strong pedigree.
