- Truly a marvelous RED GEM! Struck from the first year that small cents were struck in a bronze, rather than copper-nickel alloy. The resulting coins appear brilliant RED when first struck, rather than a golden-tan like the previous type. The present coin is an astonishing survivor, with just 3 coins graded finer in the RED category at PCGS. Struck during the bloodiest year of the Civil War, this date has long been popular, with three major cent varieties: those struck in copper-nickel, those struck in bronze, and those struck in bronze with Longacre's signature "L" on the ribbon of the headdress. Blazing red luster glows with a fiery brilliance on both sides. Sharply struck, every detail is crisply embossed by the dies and stands out. Struck from clashed and rotated dies, the reverse is approximately 20* off of its normal axis. The eye appeal is simply SUPERB and a real prize for any advanced Indian cent collector, demanding the FINEST! PCGS 46, NGC 29, CAC 20. There are just 3 in 66+ RD at PCGS and none of these have ever sold in auction. The last PCGS MS66 RD CAC sold for a record $9,600 in the 2018 ANA auction. In MS66+ RD, the Collector's Universe value is listed at $8,500, and this SUPERB GEM will bring a very strong bid. Keep in mind none of the 3 MS67 RDs graded at PCGS have ever sold in auction. This is a great coin for anyone working on a top flight set of Indian cents! Cert. Number 36760069 PCGS # 2078
