- 1862 Silver Three-Cent Piece. MS-66+ (NGC). CAC. Vividly toned surfaces exhibit a target-like distribution to antique gold, cobalt blue and reddish-rose colors. Semi-prooflike in finish with outstanding quality and eye appeal. The metallic composition and design of the Type III trime are identical to those on its Type II predecessor except for the removal of one of the extra outlines to the obverse star. Walter Breen (1988) speculates that this minor design change was made to extend working die life and otherwise ease the Mint's burden in producing these coins. The 1862 is one of the most popular type candidates of this new design, and the last issue for the denomination with a six-figure circulation strike mintage. Precious few survivors, however, could match this upper end Gem in terms of either technical quality or eye appeal. It would serve well in a high quality set. PCGS# 3680. NGC ID: 22ZB.
