FROM THE PERFECTION COLLECTION OF CAPPED BUST HALF DOLLARS WOW! This is a truly fabulous 1811 Small 8 half dollar. Struck from the O-110 die pairing, which is noted for the high quality of some of the examples (the sole finest 1811 Small 8 half dollar regardless of Overton number, an MS67+, is from the later state of this die pair) and is tied for second FINEST KNOWN for the O-110 pair. This coin is totally original, making only its second modern appearance in the numismatic marketplace in this offering. Dusted with a wonderful polychromatic blend of verdant, hazel, russet, gold, olive, and other warm, earthen tones meld in a variegated and perhaps lightly dappled pattern. The highly lustrous surfaces bring out the subtle under- and overtones and accents of brilliant silver that belies the amazingly well preserved, virtually PRISTINE fields and devices. Struck from rotated, slightly misaligned dies. The central devices are crisp and fully defined, while the peripheries and details among the stars, legend, and lower reverse are a trifle soft. While not the later O-110a die state, and not displaying the defining die cracks, both dies show stress and fatigue, with heavy flowlines drawing the stars and legends to the edge. The eye appeal is exceptional in every way, making this borderline SUPERB GEM a true delight to behold. Ex New England Museum Collection, Stack's Bowers, May 2013, lot 337. PCGS 3, NGC 0, CAC 4. There are two graded MS66+ at PCGS. Clearly, due to crossover submissions, the Population data is somewhat flawed. What we can tell you is this coin brought just shy of $50,000 in May 2013 as a PCGS MS66 CAC. The current Collectors Universe value is $75,000. There are two coins graded finer at PCGS, a 67 and a 67+,and these would bring $100,000 or more if they crossed the auction block today.
