The 1927-D nickel, like many of the mintmarked dates from the 1920s is conditionally challenging in GEM grades, as offered here. The present coin is lustrous with a satiny sheen that accents the pewter and iridescent apricot tinged silver patina. Well struck for the date, most of the details are crisply defined. Struck from a later state of the dies, die wear and fatigue is seen with the aid of a strong glass. The eye appeal is wonderful and the surfaces clean, we are not sure what prevented CAC approval. PCGS 79, NGC 31. The three most recent PCGS-graded examples to sell in auction realized from $2,880 to $5,040 and the current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $3,750. Quite challenging to find finer, this is a great example for your set. Cert. Number 45551149 PCGS # 3961
