Rich honey gold with much yellow bnlliance in the protected areas. A delightful coin with frosted motifs and highly reflective fields. An elusive date, one that saw a circulation strike mintage of just 7,497 pieces. The elusive nature of this issue was probably best descnbed by Walter Breen when he wrote : “touted as a rarity since about 1958, whenj. F. Bell circulated want lists including this date; dealers found none in stock, and the hunt was on. Survivors were usually VF to EF, extremely rare AU.” Specialists within the Liberty quarter eagle series have known for quite some time that the 1 848 is an unsung rarity, especially as a date that is overshadowed by the CAL. reverse quarter eagles of the same date, struck from gold directly from the California gold fields. With all the attention focused on the CAL. variety, its small wonder that the 1 848 issue without CAL. has flown tinder the radar for so long. Indeed, as pointed out by Dave Bowers in the Bass catalogue (Lot 413, October 1999), a Mint State 1848 quarter eagle of the present quality is much rarer than the variety with CAL. on the reverse. The present specimen is the finest example of the date, bar none, certified thus far bv NGC, a notable accomplishment indeed.
NGC Census: 1; none finer.
The reverse ot this coin is boldly prooflike with nearly numeral raised die striae running across the reverse at an angle from 10:00 to 4:00.
From the Charleston Collection. Earlier from Quality Sales Corporation’s sale of March 1972, Lot 1 165 ; Bowers and Mcrena’s sale of the Harry W. Bass, Jr. Collection, October 1999, Lot 413.
