- 1739-Q Sou Marque. Perpignan Mint. Vlack-170, var. VF-30 (PCGS). An interesting coin from several standpoints. In the first place, it is a Perpignan Mint sou marque so it's extremely rare to begin with. Next, it's a 1739, an extremely rare date from this mint. Finally, it is may be an unlisted punctuation variant as there doesn't appear to be a stop on either side of ET in the reverse legend. The coin is quite soft around ET, however, and we are unable to be certain. Whatever its unlisted status may be, the piece is a already a great rarity in the billon sou marque series. With rich, even toning in copper-gray, isolated peripheral areas soft to smooth, centers sharp for the grade. The date and mintmark are clear. Provenance: From the Sydney F. Martin Collection.
