- Gorgeous Near-Gem Sede Vacante Taler from Paderborn
Quite Possibly the Finest Extant
GERMANY. Paderborn. Taler, 1719. Clausthal Mint. Sede Vacante. PCGS MS-64 Gold Shield.
Dav-2512; Zepernick-242. Obverse: Radiant St. Liborius in bishop's miter hovers on cloud over the cathedral; Reverse: Bishop's miter on a pillow, legends above and below. Amazing quality for this often-circulated issue, exhibiting strong reflective characteristics in the fields and a nearly full strike. Pleasing medium gray tone exists in the centers on both sides, with faint blue, green and mauve color appearing around the outer legends. Quite possibly the finest surviving example of this desirable type, this being the single finest example certified by PCGS with a lone MS-64 appearing in the NGC census as well (this coin?). A search through archived auction results confirms this coin's special characteristics, as even the finest examples of this type sold domestically and abroad over the past decade pale in comparison to this awesome example. Seemingly worthy of centerpiece placement is a collection of great sophistication as such.
Estimate: $4,500 - $6,500.
Provenance: From the Linda Collection.
