- 1652 Massachusetts Bay Colony Oak Tree Shilling. Noe-14, Salmon 11a-Gi, W-530. Rarity-4. Spiny Tree. EF-45 (PCGS). 71.91 grains. Light gray with golden undertones and strong peripheral details. The central obverse has weakened a bit due to the advanced die state, but the tree remains strong and wholly defined. A glass reveals some light hairlines from a now ancient and light cleaning, and the toning offers strong originality and eye appeal. Legends are complete, weight is full, and no marks of consequence are seen on either side. Mr. Craige noted on his envelope, "Lustrous; rainbow hues; choice; CC; probably finest known." It appears Mr. Craige's friend John Ford never invited him over for show and tell, as the Ford Collection included the H.P. Smith-Clapp-Wurtzbach specimen, which realized $32,200 in 2005. It is generally thought to be finest known. This one remains very nice for the variety, and it is likewise an especially high grade survivor of the Oak Tree type.
