- This SUPERB GEM is fully struck, fully defined devices were imparted by an exacting and precision blow from the dies. A billowy satin luster captures the light and brings out the depth of the strike and provides a wonderful back lighting effect for the subtle amber, russet, tan, and olive accents. This jewel has a SUPERB eye appeal. The only year this obverse type was coined at the Philadelphia mint (although No Stars half dimes were struck in New Orleans in 1838). As a first year of issue, and a very short lived subtype, GEM No Stars half dimes always see spirited bidding. The Small Date variety is much scarcer than its Large Date counterpart overall, but in MS67, the populations are very close. Gobrecht's original design did not have the obverse stars, making the figure of Liberty stand out against the plain fields around, giving it an almost cameo like appearance, and more elegant to the eye. PCGS 6, NGC 4, CAC 5. The most recent PCGS example to sell in auction was the James Lull-D. Brent Pogue coin, which realized a robust $28,200. Before that, an NGC/CAC coin sold for $22,325 in June 2014. The current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $25,000. This coin is truly among the best examples and it is FULLY PQ and very high end. Bound for a great type set, or collection of Seated Liberty half dimes. Cert. Number 84330922 PCGS # 4312
