- Rare 1739-R Sou Marque Variety 1739-R Sou Marque. Orleans Mint. Vlack-177a. Rarity-8. AU-55 (PCGS). 34.1 grains. A really exemplary example of this extremely rare punctuation variant, with a stop after the R mintmark on the obverse. The piece is a nice pale silver-gray in color, the hue nearly uniform across both surfaces. There is ample luster remaining around the peripheries. The piece is well centered and was well struck from seemingly fresh dies. The engraver's différentis quite bold. Add to all this the fact that the coin is the Vlack plate coin and the piece qualifies for the finest of colonial American collections. Provenance: From the Sydney F. Martin Collection.
