- HM-9, the sole die for the Crosslet 4 variety, considered to be Rarity-4. The late gold coin expert David Akers wrote of this variety, "...Crosslet 4 is many times more rare than the 1834 Plain 4... and actually is just as rare as many of the more well known dates of the previous two types. Most known specimens are well worn with VF to EF being typical and AU and Unc. virtually unavailable." This lovely example saw brief circulation before being saved. Warm golden color is highlighted by traces of original luster. Despite the light wear there is bold definition to the devices. There are no serious marks of any kind, nor are there signs of cleaning or any other issues. The eye appeal is nice. PCGS 9, NGC 8. The most recent NGC AU53 to sell in auction realized $9,900 in a May 2023 auction, prior to that, one sold in January 2022 for $11,700. The current Collectors Universe value is listed at $12,500.
