- 1892 Columbian Exposition. Proof-61 (PCGS).
Handsome quality and eye appeal for the assigned grade with deep multicolored iridescence that stands tall above the underlying reflective fields. The toning is elegant and attractive, with deeper russet and blue encircling the obverse and reverse while the centers are a dusky golden color. These Proof Columbian half dollars are scarce today, PCGS for all its years of grading coins records a total of 55 in various grades in their Population Report including Cameos This example is at the lower end for quality of those known, but certainly ranks high in the eye appeal standard. Examination notes a few trivial hairlines in the delicate mirror fields, but a coin which any collector would be proud to own and display. One of only 103 Proofs of the date produced, all of which were struck by hand at the Philadelphia Mint on November 19, 1892. Scarce and eagerly awaiting inclusion in an advanced collection of classic commemorative coinage.
