This Condition Census JR-2 is a fantastic example of this scarce Rarity-5 variety, likely the fifth finest known example of the die pairing. Only 21,760 dimes were struck, using two die pairs; JR-2 is the rarer of the two, and is identifiable by the dot between the 1 and 8 in the date and that the star touches the eagle’s beak and there is a die line that extends off the shield into the field. Outstanding quality for an 1800 dime with gorgeous gunmetal blue and champagne toning on both sides. Flashy luster is everywhere and comes alive when examined under a light. The strike is prodigious and full, with all the stars and curls bold on the obverse, along with the details of the eagle and stars on the reverse. No adjustment marks or hits to be found with a strong loupe and while there are few minor scuffs on the obverse, the reverse is super clean. The eye appeal is incredible for the type, which, save for a small number of superb examples is quite challenging to find in Mint State grades, especially CHOICE ones with CAC approval. Ex L.A. Type Set, Stack's 55th Anniversary Sale, October 1990, lot 681; Lemus Collection; Stack's sale of the Lemus Collection, (70th Anniversary Sale), October 2005, lot 510; Goldberg's May 2006 sale, lot 1690; Stack's July 2009 sale, lot 303; Stack's sale of the Eliasberg/Krause Collections, March 2010, lot 631; Goldberg's February 2013 sale, lot 1245; Legend Rare Coin Auctions' Regency Auction XIV, October 2015, lot 241; Heritage's 2020 FUN Auction, lot 4145. PCGS 1, NGC 0, CAC 2 (this number includes the MS63+). Before this coin sold in the 2020 FUN auction, we sold this lovely example for $55,813 back in 2015. Today's market is stronger than it was in early 2020 and the PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $45,000 and the CAC CPG value is $46,100. It should be noted that any GEM today is going to be a six figure coin and the precious few that survive so fine are impounded in important collections. The rarity of many of these issues is simply not understood by most collectors, and high circulated grades are also quite challenging to acquire. An important opportunity! Don’t miss this handsome coin if you are serious about landing a high-end, high appeal early dime. Cert. Number 25678549 PCGS # 4470
