- 1916-S Indian Eagle. MS-64+ (NGC). CAC. 1867 Liberty Double Eagle. AU-50 (NGC). Although the recorded mintage of 138,500 pieces implies availability, this is only true in lower mint state grades or even circulated examples. Furthermore, this date suffered particularly from the massive meltings that gobbled up the survivors in later years. Perhaps 1,000 or so exist today of the 1916-S issue. Gem or so coins are formidable rarities, with a mere handful that qualify at that lofty level. The present coin is absolutely on the cusp of that grade, it is the only "+" yet seen at this level by either grading service, and it has the coveted CAC seal of approval. Close examination finds a singular nick on the high cheekbone of Liberty and a couple of minor luster grazes in the open field before her chin. A delicate patch of orange-gold toning resides near the date, another hint or two on the upper obverse. On the reverse there is a tiny scuff on the E of WE, other bagmarks of little consequence or notice. Blazing mint luster throughout and a prize for the specialist who demands quality and rarity.
