- Exceptionally Sharp and Appealing St. Patrick Farthing
Undated (ca. 1652-1674) St. Patrick Farthing. Martin 4e.1-Ga.1, W-11500. Rarity-6+. Copper. Sea Beasts Below King. AU-50 (PCGS).
This is a remarkable example of both the type and die pairing that is worthy of very strong bids. Striking detail is impressively sharp around the peripheries, allowing for full appreciation of many minor design elements that are often indistinct on St. Patrick farthings. Central detail is also very bold over most features, although we do note minor softness to the center of King's David's portrait on the obverse, and the top of Saint Patrick on the reverse. The golden splash is well centered over the crown on the obverse, extends to the top of King David's head, and provides the only significant variation to otherwise warm ruddy-brown patina. Close inspection with a loupe reveals light to moderate die rust on both sides, but even under such careful scrutiny there are no significant marks. There is a spot of verdigris on the obverse over and around the letter R in FLOREAT. This is a rare die pairing of the issue, and the present example is far finer than both the intermediate and late die state plate coins in Syd Martin's excellent 2018 reference Saint Patrick Coinage. It is presumably the EF-40 specimen attributed to our consignor in that reference, ahead of a couple of VFs, VGs, and an AG in the author's census of 4e.1-Ga.1 examples. Whether one is a high grade type collector of colonial era coinage or a specialist in the challenging St. Patrick series, this superior quality example is sure to please.
Provenance: From the Bill Gleckler Collection.
