- An historic offering! This is an important first year of the gold dollar denomination struck at the always popular Dahlonega mint. While the mintage was only 21,588, its first year status led a fair number of examples to be saved at the time of issue and Doug Winter rates this as the most common Dahlonega mint date in Mint State. That said, in this lofty state of preservation, it is VERY RARE and VERY RARELY offered! WOW! Ranking among the top ten examples seen at NGC with just a single MS65 graded higher at that service, this is a truly majestic specimen. Boldly lustrous throughout, the central devices are smooth and vivid, with a band of slightly rougher (as made) textured surfaces near the periphery (this is a feature that is often seen on examples of this date/mint). A bright golden surface overall displays hints of olive that adds dramatically to the great visual allure. The devices are crisply rendered by a strong strike and the eye appeal is exceptional in every way. PCG S 3, NGC 9. Given the dearth of auction appearances over the last 22 years, we believe the NGC Census figures are inflated somewhat. The last NGC graded example sold nearly a decade ago (April 2013), and the last PCGS-graded example sold even farther back in March 2006! The current Collectors Universe value is listed at $45,000. There is a single NGC MS65 finer, a coin that has not appeared in auction. This is a very important first year of the denomination and a very popular branch mint issue. Good luck. Cert.
