- 1965 United States Assay Commission Medal. By Frank Gasparro. JK AC-109. Rarity-7. Bronze. MS-62 (NGC).
57 mm. Pronounced mottling to olive and deep golden-brown patina is all that appears to preclude a Choice Mint State grade for this undeniably original example. A touch of cabinet friction to Johnson's nose and faint spot in the left obverse field are also noted for accuracy. Accompanied by the original blue leather case, which is fully functional and exceptionally well preserved in the absence of obvious signs of handling. (Total: 1 medal; 1 case)A rare and popular issue, the 1965 Assay Commission medal features an adaptation of John Ward Dunsmore's historically fictitious painting Washington Inspecting the First Money Coined by the United States. The estimated mintage of 50 medals for this issue includes 22 examples for the commissioners, plus perhaps as many as 28 additional pieces produced for distribution to Mint officials and others.
Provenance: From Heritage's FUN Signature Auction of January 2013, lot 14779.
