- For collectors of early dimes, one of the classic auctions is the October 1990 Stack's auction of the Allen F. Lovejoy Collection. Cataloged in that 1990 auction, quite briefly as: "Very Choice Brilliant Uncirculated. A tiny scuff below the eagle's beak, but otherwise gem. Full frosty cartwheel lustre, light russet borders. NGC MS-64." Those few minor marks below the eagle's wing, along with two very minor toning spots on the obverse will forever help the collector identify this near-GEM. The luster is somewhat flashy with hints of reflection and the peripheral toning has some deeper coppery tones, other than just the "russet" noted in the description. The eye appeal is spectacular for the date and grade. This coin is ex Adolphe Menjou Collection, Numismatic Gallery, June 15, 1950, lot 172; Harold Bareford Collection, Stack's, October 1981, lot 164; Allen F. Lovejoy Collection, Stack's, October 1990, lot 63. PCGS 11, NGC 21, CAC 3. This is the only MS64+ graded and PCGS has only graded 3 MS65s finer. The most recent regular PCGS MS64 CAC sold for $9,988 in June 2016 and the Pogue coin was a non-CAC MS65 that sold for $19,975 in February 2016. Even back in 1990, this coin sold for $5,500! This near GEM has such a great look and numismatically important provenance that it should see extremely active bidding. Bound for a SUPERB set of Capped Bust dimes! Cert. Number 35929635 PCGS # 4498
