- GREAT BRITAIN. George V & Mary Silver Jubilee Gold Medal, 1935. London Mint. PCGS SPECIMEN-62 Gold Shield.
BHM-4249; Eimer-2029a. By P. Metcalfe. Mintage: 99. Obverse: VI MAII MCMX MCMXXXV, jugate crowned busts left of Mary, draped, and George, mantled and wearing Chain of the Garter; Reverse: STET FORTUNA DOMUS, facade of Windsor Castle. Even RARERthan the small size medal of this type, the present example offers incredibly brilliant and reflective surfaces, along with a charming overall golden-orange hue. Just a few lightly scattered marks prevent an even higher designation for this wonderful specimen--the only graded example of the type across both services.
The reverse features Windsor Castle, which served as the basis for the royal family's name change during World War I. As George's father, Edward VII, emanated from the German house of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha (owing to the German origin of Prince Albert, Queen Victoria's husband), the outbreak of the war necessitated a name change lest the royals become associated with their enemies. George chose 'Windsor' as the royal family name as it had served as the name of the royal residence just west of London.
Estimate: $6,000 - $9,000.
Provenance: From the Duke of Lansing Collection.
