- A very rare “Goloid” dollar pattern, struck in goloid (an alloy of 5.46% gold, 84.54% silver, and 10% copper) with a reeded edge. The coiled hair design designed by George Morgan is very similar to the graceful coiled hair bust of Liberty on the extremely rare $4 Stella patterns of 1879 and 1880, and is part of the monetary system that was proposed to create a metric coinage system that would allow for more fluid international acceptance. The coin is considered to be R-7- (7-12 examples). Soft silver-dove patination blankets rich, watery reflective fields. Rotating the coin in a light, very subtle iridescent champagne hues can be seen. A few microscopic lines keep this coin from a higher grade. Because of the way this alloy tones, they are often seen somewhat lacking in eye appeal; this coin is a very pleasing exception. PCGS 3, NGC 2, CAC 1. The last PCGS PR64 to sell was back in the November 2001 sale of the Tree Many Feathers Collection of Patterns, realizing $5,290. This coin is accompanied by a collector envelope which notes that it was purchased on October 26, 1976 from dealer Robert Batchelder, who was known to handle some of the best quality coins in the era he was active. Andy Pollock lists 10 possible examples, the present example could either be the Olsen coin (Stack’s November 1965, lot 78) or the John Beck coin (sold by Abner Kreisberg in January 1975, lot 1321); neither sale has a photo. The current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $8,750. A very rare pattern that is fresh to the market and a type that is not often seen. For the advanced collector of patterns, particularly who appreciate the history of the $4 Stella and other proposals for a metric coinage system. It may be another 15 years until another appears at auction! Good luck! PCGS # 62009 Certification Number 81955018 PCGS # 62009
