- 1787 New Jersey Copper. Maris 73-aa, W-5430. Rarity-4. Plaited Mane, Ghost NOVA--Overstruck on an ET LIR Connecticut Copper. Fine-15 (PCGS).
127.8 grains. Glossy light brown devices contrast with darker granular fields. The obverse displays just two pieces of legend, the ET LIR of the Connecticut undertype at left and CAESAEA in its usual position. The reverse is a similar jumble, reading CONNEC: LURIBUC UNUM. The tops of the date digits are present, and the central devices are pretty bold on both sides. Aside from the somewhat rough surfaces, no other flaws are noted.
The most common of the Plaited Mane coppers, the Maris 73-aa often displays some of the most spectacular overstrikes in the New Jersey series. This example offers good quality and an identifiable undertype, indeed, probably an attributable one if someone were to put in the time. This example is a perfect way to add this variety to your cabinet.
Provenance: From the E Pluribus Unum Collection.
PCGS# 763355.
