- A totally AMAZING and high end example of this conditionally VERY RARE date! Among the FINEST KNOWN from a mintage of only 24,000. David Akers noted: “this date is grossly underrated in the standard price guides. I have never seen a full mint state 1861-S. Specimens better than VF are genuinely rare." Today, a tiny number of examples survived without being placed into circulation. While gold coins were hoarded in the east as the Civil War raged, the western economy was gold based and the coins circulated extensively. PCGS has graded five coins in all Mint State grades, MS63 being the finest, and it should be noted that NO Mint State example has ever garnered CAC approval. Incredibly lustrous and vibrant, the surfaces scream with a bold mint brilliance. Virtually every detail is crisply defined and fully rendered by an exacting blow from the dies. There are some minor ticks and light lines that justify the assigned grade but they can be overlooked in light of the overall sensational quality and visual allure. A rich orange-gold patina with apricot-rose hues attests to the originality and really adds to the stunning eye appeal. PCGS 2, NGC 1. The other PCGS MS62 last sold back in August 2011; this was the NGC MS62 sold as part of the Twelve Oaks Collection back in 2016 which realized a world record price of $25,850. That was a weak market, today, the PCGS Price Guide suggests a value of $35,000. Two coins are listed finer on the PCGS Population Report, a 62+ and a 63 which neither has ever sold in auction. This is likely the FINEST you will see on the open market and will see very strong bidding, no doubt setting a new world record price when the hammer falls. Bound for a WORLD CLASS set of quarter eagles. Good luck. Cert. Number 43031231 PCGS # 7795
