- 1798 Draped Bust Dime. JR-4. Rarity-3. Large 8. AU-55 (NGC). Richly toned in variegated steel and rose-gray shades, this handsome Choice AU also offers sharp striking detail in all but a few isolated areas. Mentionable softness of strike is confined to the left obverse periphery and the junction of the eagle's left wing and shield on the reverse. Free of detracting blemishes with a pleasingly smooth appearance in hand. JR-4 is the only die marriage of the Large 8 Guide Bookvariety, and it vies with JR-1 (1798/7, 16 Stars on Reverse) as the most readily obtainable variety of the 1798 Draped Bust dime. Survivors are scarce from a market availability standpoint, however, especially in the more desirable type grades of AU and Mint State, as here. PCGS# 4466. NGC ID: 236E.
