The 1891-S saw a mintage of nearly 5.3 million pieces, but a large number must have remained in Treasury vaults and melted down in 1918, as this date is scarce in MS65 and quite challenging any finer. It also has a distinction, known to collectors of toned dollars as not often coming with color. The present plus-graded GEM offers dual sided toning, likely imparted by long term storage in an old collector envelope. Dappled pastel iridescent lilac-gray, soft gold, pale clover, and powder blue hues dance across the vibrantly lustrous surfaces. Devoid of serious contact, and generally well struck, this is a great example for any high end set. PCGS 612, NGC 228, CAC 91. There are 26 in MS65+ and fewer than 150 graded higher. The current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $2,750. The most recent sold for $2,703 in our April 2022 Central States Regency Auction. We anticipate very strong bidding when this one crosses the block. Cert. Number 44884115 PCGS # 7210
