- Low Mintage Proof-Only 1877 Twenty-Cent Piece
1877 Twenty-Cent Piece. Proof-64+ (PCGS). CAC.
Blanketed in warm copper-gray, this handsome specimen also exhibits blushes of cobalt blue, medium rose and golden-apricot iridescence that is best appreciated with the aid of direct lighting. The fields are modestly reflective through the toning and suspending sharp and richly frosted central devices. An attractive and richly original near-Gem.
With only 510 coins struck, all of which were Proofs, the 1877 has the lowest mintage and is the scarcest date in the twenty-cent series of 1875 to 1878. A large portion of the mintage is thought to have been melted after going unsold to collectors, resulting in an even more scant net-mintage of about 350 pieces.
CAC Population: 14; 14.
PCGS# 5305. NGC ID: 27H4.
