- 1880 Trade Dollar. Proof-63 Cameo (NGC). CAC. A flashy and brilliant Choice Proof with platinum-white luster at the centers and a dusting of faint vanilla hues throughout. Deeply reflective in the fields and sharply struck with rich frosting on the devices. There is something special about the Proof-only trade dollars minted in Philadelphia from 1878 to 1883. The two largest mintages are 1879 and 1880, due to a great flurry of investment interest at the end of the first year and the beginning of the second. Most of the extra coinage went into the hands of speculators, and today many are lost, reducing the survivors to considerably fewer. Forming a set of one each of these dates is an interesting possibility. The offered coin can be a nice start, offering superior eye appeal and technical quality. PCGS# 87060. NGC ID: 27YS.
