- 1899 United States Assay Commission Medal. By Charles E. Barber and George T. Morgan. JK AC-43. Rarity-5. Silver. MS-66 (NGC).
33 mm. Deep steel-gray patina with blended olive highlights. A bold matte-like specimen with exceptionally well preserved surfaces for the issue. According to the annual report of the mint director, 40 silver Assay Commission medals were produced for 1899, along with 10 bronze impressions. There is no mention of white metal strikings from these dies, although we have offered two such examples in recent years: the Dreyfuss-Jewell specimen most recently offered as lot 204 in our March 2020 Baltimore Auction; and the Brand-Keusch specimen cataloged as Uncirculated in our (Stack's) November 2008 sale. The present silver example is accompanied by the original maroon leather case, which is fully functional, yet with a loose hinge, some scuffing on the exterior surfaces. (Total: 1 medal; 1 case)
Provenance: From Steve Hayden's Sale #33, lot 351. Lot tag included.
