- 1652 Massachusetts Bay Colony Pine Tree Sixpence. W-670, Noe-33, Crosby 1-A. Rarity-3. EF-45 (PCGS).
Attractive toning the blends light gray and gold with patches of russet at the centers of the obverse. The strike is sharp and reasonably well centered, as always the planchets were too small for the dies used to coin these rare pieces, so portions of the legend are always off the edge of the coin, usually at the top of the obverse as seen on this example. Clean fields and devices after limited circulation, and a desirable coin for the collector to obtain. The fine engraver's touches on the lettering and die work are clear with a strong loupe, adding a high degree of character to the present coin. Scarce and desirable.
Although the silver Pine Tree and related coinage of colonial Massachusetts has been popular in numismatic circles for a long time, it has been in the past generation that these coins have truly come to the forefront. Today there is more information available than ever before, including through the Colonial Coin Collectors Club (C-4), publisher of a fine journal and the Colonial Newsletter issued by the American Numismatic Society, not to overlook Q. David Bowers’ Encyclopedia of Colonial and Early American Coins, which has been a best seller.
