- Frank Lin Collection of Modern Chinese Rarities. KM#949. Mintage: 108. Serial number 008. An instant rarity by virtue of limited production, and an instant classic by virtue of aesthetic design and production quality, the 5-ounce unicorn has very few peers amongst modern world coins (or those of any era). The weight is intended to be 155.517 grams (presumed, but not indicated on the slab) with a purity of 99.99%, resulting in a net weight of 4.9995-ounces of the precious metal. The same design, with a western unicorn surrounded by roses on the denomination side facing an eastern unicorn standing upon stationary clouds, is also used on smaller denomination examples, but the 500-yuan is far and away the one to have. Regarding the serial number 008, this is a hugely significant characteristic of this particular specimen. In Chinese lore, the number is the luckiest number and favored above all others by virtue of association with "wealth" and "luck". Culturally, any entry into a collectable series bearing the esteemed "8" will be given highest priority, as would, for example, and apartment, or even the eighth floor of a building.
