- 1793 Flowing Hair Cent. Chain Reverse. S-Unattributable. AMERICA. Poor-1 (PCGS). A find for the budget minded type collector seeking a more affordable, yet still numismatically appealing example of this historic first year large cent issue. As faint outlines to Liberty's portrait and the central reverse design elements make clear, this is most definitely a Chain cent. The patient observer with a bit of imagination can also discern elements of the date and some of the peripheral lettering on the reverse. Conclusive evidence for PCGS' AMERICA attribution is difficult to come by, however, and there is just not enough detail for us to provide a definite Sheldon number, although such technicalities are perhaps irrelevant for the kind of type collector that we anticipate showing greatest interest in this piece. Autumn and ruddy-brown surfaces are rough and pitted overall, yet no more so than one should expect for a 1793-dated cent at the assigned grade level.
