- It is always a marvel to see early U.S. copper coins that survive with full original mint red color. This C-1, B-1 is a borderline GEM with a bold fiery mint red color and strong, rolling cartwheel luster. Sharply struck from Die State II with a single clash mark seen under the bust. The star centers, dentils, hair details, and leaves are all sharply struck up. A strong glass reveals some minor toning flecks that is common to Classic Head half cents, even in full RED. This lovely coin likely originated in the Elmer Sears hoard, which Walter Breen notes contained "at least a back of a thousand spotty mint red examples," that was discovered in the mid 1930s. Today, the populations show much less than that number in RB and RD graded, suggesting that this was another numismatic legend that adds color to our great hobby. PCGS 35, NGC 9, CAC 11. The most recent example to sell in auction realized $4,320 in the 2018 ANA auction. Prior to that, the Gardner coin sold for $4,994. The current PCGS Price Guide is $4,000, but this CAC-approved near-GEM should bring more. Just seven coins are graded finer, and no CAC approved MS65 RD has ever sold, and if you could find the single example, it would likely cost in excess of $20,000. Perfect for type or date purposes, and a coin that will delight even the pickiest EAC collector. Cert. Number 37000639 PCGS # 001170
