- The 17-S Obverse is a classic early date in this always popular series. The first two years saw the mintmark placed below TRUST on the obverse; part way through the year, the mintmark was relocated to the lower left reverse. Only 952,000 of this early variant were struck before the change over, and these circulated extensively. GEM Mint State pieces are rare, and excessively so any finer. The present coin has an even frosty texture to the surfaces. Generally crisp in definition on both sides. Well preserved, there are no serious marks or ticks of any kind, indeed for the sake of accuracy, we note a tiny trace of contact on the sun. Otherwise the surfaces are clean and have a nice eye appeal. PCGS 49, NGC 29. The most recent PCGS-graded examples to sell were CAC approved, selling for $22,913 and $35,250 in our July and January 2020 Regency Auctions respectively. Non-CAC coins have sold in the $17,400 to $21,150 range and the current Collectors Universe value is listed at $23,500. Just four coins are graded finer--3 in MS66 and a single MS67 at the top of the Population.
