1839-D Classic Quarter Eagle. MS-61 (NGC). Attractive copper-gold traces in the fields with a dash of olive-gold on the high points of the design. The strike is fairly sharp although minor softness is noted on some of the obverse stars and the central reverse. The reverse die was obviously lapped prior to striking this piece, with shallow definition on the branch and leaves. The mintage of 13,674 pieces is tiny by any standards today, with survivors rare and demand far exceeds supply. At this lofty Mint State grade, there are just a handful that exist, and all are highly prized by collectors.
