- GREAT BRITAIN. Penny, ND (ca. 1205-07). London Mint; Ilger, moneyer. John. PCGS AU-55.
S-1351; N-970. Short cross coinage, class Vb; struck in the name of Henry II. Obverse: Crowned bust facing, holding scepter; Reverse: Voided short cross, with quatrefoils in angles. This impeccable Penny is beautifully struck, though slightly off center, and has a light, electric blue look which gives great charm.
Younger brother of Richard, John succeeded him to the throne. John, upon his ascension, found himself in conflict with France and his wars were long, unpopular, and costly. John irritated the powerful nobility of England with his taxation to gain revenue for these conflicts. This tension came to a head in 1215 when rebel barons revolted against John. The grievances filed against John and treaty that followed to appease some of these concerns was one of the most important events in human history. The document known as Magna Carta gave rights to nobility and allowed for an assembly that would morph into the British Parliament to form. This momentous event was the first step towards a modern self-representative government, and the document from the reign of John was the inspiration for the English Bill of Rights, the American Constitution, the French Declaration of the Rights of Man, and the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights. John died in 1216 with a legacy of a tyrant and that legacy has survived largely unchallenged for 800 years.
