- 1877 Three-Dollar Gold Piece. MS-61 (PCGS). 1849 Liberty Half Eagle. MS-62 (PCGS). Especially attractive for the rich coppery-gold peripheral toning, reflective fields and handsome orange-gold color. The strike is full and complete, with no softness on the wreath or Liberty. In terms of the presentation, the fields and devices show minimal handling marks, a few lines and scattered nicks, but fewer than one might expect for the modest grade. Liberty's face and neck are clean with just a few tiny nicks visible with a strong loupe. For identification, there is a tiny planchet flake missing from the field just right of the D of UNITED, another touching a dentil between TA of STATES. The combined number certified between PCGS and NGC in mint state is 18 pieces, with almost certain duplication within that paltry sum. Including circulated examples the number reported edges to around 75 pieces--precious few to choose from when trying to complete a date collection. Obviously the low mintage of 1877 was rectified when 1878 rolled around, as the following year is one of the most common dates of the series! All told, this is a classic rarity in any grade, in full mint state the desirability increases dramatically.
