FRANCE. Les Cent-Jours (the Hundred Days). Silver 5 Francs Pattern, 1815-A. Paris Mint. Napoleon I. PCGS PROOF-63+ Gold Shield.
KM-Pn21; Gad-594. Plain Edge. This beautifully preserved pattern exhibits all the fine qualities expected from the Paris mint, masterfully engraved dies with precise execution of manufacture. The intricate devices and expressive portrait boast a frosty texture in stark contrast to the hard flashy fields. Lovely rich mottled old cabinet patina accentuates this highly sought-after rarity elevating its desirability. Seldom encountered in any condition the issues from this time period are always a collector favorite with lots of crossover appeal.
The return of Napoleon to Paris on 20 March 1815 from his eleven-month exile on the island of Elba marked the beginning of the Hundred Days Was, also known as the War of the Seventh Coalition, and the second restoration of King Louis XVIII on 8 July 1815. Seven days prior to Napoleon's return to Paris the Congress of Vienna declared him an outlaw. On the 25 March, the key members of the Seventh Coalition, Austria, Prussia, Russia and the United Kingdom each committed 150,000 men to end Napoleon's conquest and rule. The stage was set for the defeat of Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo, the last conflict of the Napoleonic Wars, the second restoration of the French Monarchy and Napoleons permanent exile to the isolated island of Saint Helena where is died in 1821.
