- Struck using the N-19 die pairing, which were only used to strike Proofs. While the exact number minted is unknown, PCGS CoinFacts estimates approximately 25 known in all grades and color designations; indeed, the current combined PCGS and NGC Population figures tally to 25 pieces. Over the years scholars have attempted to create a census of auction appearances, but due to lack of plates or poor old images, matching has proven impossible in many cases. Including off the market institutional collections, as well as specimens yet to be graded, perhaps as many as three dozen are known total. The present near-GEM boasts bold reflective mirrors with excellent clarity, depth and cleanliness. We note a tiny planchet flake in the left obverse field, it does not impact the excellent eye appeal. Wonderful, warm chocolate brown mixes with some pastel color that clings to the fields; the reverse shows some traces of original red. Every detail, razor sharp in definition, shows precision of strike. The eye appeal is excellent. A limited, but unknown number of Proofs were struck. PCGS 4, NGC 1, CAC 3. This is the only PR64+ BN graded at PCGS and only three coins are graded higher in the BN category, 3 in PR65 and one in PR66. This coin most recently sold in our June 2015 Regency Auction for $9,106 and the current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $14,000. This coin has been with our current collector consignor since that June 2015 auction. For a coin that offers beauty and rarity in spades, this coin seems undervalued to us! Good luck! Cert.
