What a great Morgan dollar! The 1889 came from a huge mintage, more than 21.7 million were struck at the Philadelphia mint. However, most of this mintage was likely stored in bags in Treasury Department vaults which in 1918, under the auspices of the Pittman Act, melted countless millions of Morgan dollars. Today in SUPERB GEM, the 1889 is a MAJOR RARITY with just 15 graded at PCGS. Compare that to other high mintage dates and their Populations in SUPERB grade.
Clearly this coin was housed in an old album for many years before being graded by PCGS. The obverse rim is framed by variegated blue and gold rings before yielding to untoned, velvety brilliant silver in the center. The reverse has an even more subtle halo of gold around the rims. The lustrous surfaces gleam boldly with a gorgeous satiny glow. The sharply impressed devices have a wonderfully frosted texture. Any stray tick requires a strong glass to locate and none are distracting. The eye appeal is spectacular and we really do not know why CAC did not bean this beauty. It is VERY HIGH END!
PCGS 15, NGC 6. No PCGS MS67 has sold in auction since 2019; two examples sold that year, including one in March that brought $24,000. The current PCGS Price Guide value is $19,000. There is a single MS68 graded higher, a coin last seen in the 2009 FUN auction. Bound for an AMAZING Morgan dollar collection and will entice strong bidding activity when it crosses the block. Good luck.
