- Strictly original with rich, deep mirrors on both sides. The strike is bold throughout with all the details fully rendered. This coin displays wonderful originality, imparted from very long term storage in an old collector envelope. Rich orange-tan highlights are joined by olive-russet and subtle lilac undertones, all brought to life when rotated in a light. A very popular 1858 pattern cent, struck in copper-nickel with a plain edge. The “small eagle” design seen here is thought to be the work of Anthony Paquet and the regular wreath reverse as seen on the regular issue Flying Eagle cent. It is considered to be an R-5 Judd variety. These 1858 pattern cents were issued in sets to collectors and other contemporary VIPs. PCGS 23, NGC 13, CAC 3. No CAC-approved example has ever sold in auction. The most recent PCGS coin sold in January 2015 for $2,233. The CU value is $3,100. The presently offered near-gem has a classic old time pedigree, having been sold in the February 1976 Quality Sales Corp sale of the John Beck Collection, Part II (lot 1083--original lot tag included). It is now making its first auction appearance, freshly graded by PCGS and we think that an advanced small cent collector would love to add this coin to their sets; or if you have not yet taken the leap into the diverse world of patterns, the J-206 is a fantastic “entry-level” coin to get you started. Either way, we anticipate strong bidding. PCGS # 11877 Certification Number 81955012 PCGS # 11877
